Collection routes
Macon kept its old houses. There is an unusually large stock of intact antebellum and Victorian buildings here, one of the densest concentrations anywhere in the South, and a rug in a plastered 1850s parlour has almost nothing in common with a rug in a 2015 house in Kathleen except the calendar. Put on top of that the two things Middle Georgia lays on a floor every spring — iron-red clay off the Piedmont side of the Fall Line, and a pollen load that turns everything yellow for a month — and a base thirty minutes south that moves households in and out on two- and three-year assignments. Twelve areas, twelve different ways for a rug to come apart. Here is what we usually find once it is lifted.
Intown Macon
The rugs that come out of these streets are usually damaged by the repair work rather than by the house.
Rug cleaning in Intown MaconVineville
Living on a main road puts something into a rug that a house two streets back never sees, and it is not dust.
Rug cleaning in VinevilleIngleside
Heart pine is the reason, and it is a chemistry problem rather than a dirt one.
Rug cleaning in InglesideShirley Hills
There is a week in March when everything on this hill turns yellow, and the reason it matters to a rug is that pine pollen is not dust.
Rug cleaning in Shirley HillsNorth Macon
The ground on this side of the Fall Line is iron-rich Piedmont clay, and the mistake everybody makes is treating it as dirt when it behaves like a pigment.
Rug cleaning in North MaconBass Road
Site-finished floors are the local hazard, and it is the finish rather than the sanding dust that does the damage.
Rug cleaning in Bass RoadWarner Robins
Rugs here are damaged by being moved rather than by being walked on, and what they arrive with are handling injuries.
Rug cleaning in Warner RobinsBonaire
A very large share of the rugs in these houses are viscose, and most owners have no idea, because it is sold as bamboo silk, art silk, banana silk or simply as silk.
Rug cleaning in BonaireKathleen
Urine is not a stain, it is three problems arriving at once, which is why household products fail on it so consistently.
Rug cleaning in KathleenPerry
The recurring job in Perry is a rug that was cleaned in the room with a rented machine and got dirtier afterwards, and the owner is right about what they saw.
Rug cleaning in PerryForsyth
A rug that has stayed in one room since the 1970s has a very particular set of injuries and almost none of them are wear.
