What North Macon is built from
The subdivisions north of the river along Zebulon Road, Riverside Drive and Rivoli, largely 1970s through 2000s. Brick ranches and two-storey houses on slab or crawl, hardwood and tile through the main rooms, and a rug in every one of them.

The North Macon problem
The ground on this side of the Fall Line is iron-rich Piedmont clay, and the mistake everybody makes is treating it as dirt when it behaves like a pigment. What makes it red is iron oxide, and the particles are fine enough that they do not rest in a wool pile, they lodge between the scales on the surface of the individual fibres. That is why a clay mark lightens under a vacuum and then returns as a rust-coloured shadow the next time the rug is damp, and why the whole field slowly warms in tone without ever once looking dirty. Two things set it permanently. The first is heat: a clay-marked rug dried in the sun, or gone over with a steam machine, has had the iron baked into the wool. The second is water applied too early. Wet clay is plastic, so anything worked into it while it is damp drives it deeper and cements the sand that arrived with it into a hard shell around the base of the knots — you can hear that rug before you can see it. Dry removal first, then flushing, and that order is not negotiable.
