What Intown Macon is built from
The historic core west of the Ocmulgee: the College Hill Corridor and the streets around Mercer, and block after block of 1850s and 1860s brick and frame houses that survived where most cities' did not. Original lime-and-gypsum plaster on wood lath, heart-pine floors, ceilings well over ten feet, and in a great many of them work still going on.

The Intown Macon problem
The rugs that come out of these streets are usually damaged by the repair work rather than by the house. A wall or a ceiling of this age is lime and gypsum plaster on wood lath, and when it is opened up — for wiring, for a leak, for a room finally being done — what comes off it is nothing like the wood dust a floor sander makes. It is an extremely fine mineral dust, and it is strongly alkaline. That matters twice over: wool is a protein fibre and alkali attacks it, and most of the dyes in an older rug shift colour in alkali long before the fibre itself is in trouble. The dust sifts straight through the pile to the base, a domestic vacuum pulls air over the top of it, and the first time the rug takes on any moisture it goes chalky and blooms pale in the field. The second half of it is time. These projects run for months rather than weeks, and a rug left in the house is in a building with the conditioning off, plastic sheeting over an opening, and nobody in it from one week to the next.
