What Bonaire is built from
Houston County north-east of Warner Robins along the Highway 96 corridor: new subdivisions on sandy coastal-plain ground, built quickly and still being built, with hard flooring nearly throughout and rugs used to mark out space in an open plan.
Young households, first houses, and furnishings bought online in one go rather than accumulated over twenty years. The living-room rug and the dining-room rug usually arrived in the same fortnight.
The Bonaire problem
A very large share of the rugs in these houses are viscose, and most owners have no idea, because it is sold as bamboo silk, art silk, banana silk or simply as silk. It is none of those. It is regenerated cellulose — wood pulp chemically reformed into a filament — and it is the most fragile thing anyone puts on a floor. Wet it and it loses roughly half its strength, so a fibre rubbed while it is damp does not clean, it breaks, and it fuzzes into a grey patch that is permanent. Plain water yellows it, because the cellulose oxidises: a dropped glass leaves a brown-edged ring that no amount of blotting will take out, and a dog that is sick on it leaves a mark that is now part of the rug. It also mats flat underfoot and never springs back. None of that is a cleaning failure, it is simply what the fibre is, and it is worth knowing before somebody offers to steam clean it. A viscose rug is handled with almost no moisture at all, and it belongs anywhere except an entry, a dining room, or a house with a puppy in it.
