Those machines are built for wall-to-wall carpet and they carry a strongly alkaline detergent, because on nylon carpet that works. On a rug, three things go wrong together. The alkalinity is wrong for wool, which is a protein fibre, and it lifts natural dye while it is at it. There is nowhere near enough suction to recover what went in, so most of the detergent stays where it landed. And the machine has no rinse stage at all, which is the part a proper wash spends most of its time on. Detergent left down in a pile is sticky and it stays sticky, so from that day on it grabs every particle of soil that lands anywhere near it. The rug looks bright for about three weeks and then goes down faster than it ever did before, and each home cleaning after that adds another layer to the same problem. Recovering it means flushing all of that back out first, before anything about the actual soil can even be assessed.
