What Forsyth is built from
Monroe County, about twenty-five miles up the interstate: a courthouse square with antebellum and Victorian houses on the streets behind it, farmland beyond that, and a good many houses that have belonged to the same family for three or four generations.

The Forsyth problem
A rug that has stayed in one room since the 1970s has a very particular set of injuries and almost none of them are wear. Furniture that has never moved has pressed the pile down to the foundation in eight small circles that stopped recovering years ago. One end lies in the light from the same window every afternoon, so there is a faded band across it that the other end does not have. Underneath, a solid rubber-backed pad bought decades ago has hardened, cracked and shed into the back of the rug, and where it lay against the foundation the cotton has gone soft and grey. Then there are the repairs, which are the real work, because every one of them was done in good faith to keep the rug in service: carpet tape along a splitting side, iron-on binding across a worn end, a hem machined straight through the knots, glue on a corner. All of that has to come off before anything can be rebuilt properly, and adhesive that has had thirty years to cure into cotton takes longer to get out than the reweaving takes to put in. It is still worth doing. These are usually the best rugs we see.
