What Gray is built from

The Gray problem
Everybody worries about clothes moths, and out here the more common culprit is the carpet beetle, which is a different animal with a different way in. Moths are an indoor problem that spreads from a rug to a wardrobe and back. Carpet beetles breed outdoors — in flowers, on the pollen the adults feed on, and above all in birds' nests, which on a house with deep eaves and open outbuildings means a supply of them a few feet above the porch. The adults come to light in the spring, get in through an open window or a torn screen, and lay in the wool. That changes what you look for. Moth damage hides under furniture in dark corners; beetle damage turns up anywhere at all, including out in the open in a well-lit room, and the tell is not a hole. It is a scatter of shed larval skins that look like tiny hollow husks, alongside grazing that wanders in a line rather than eating out a patch. The treatment ends up the same — the rug is washed, the infestation dealt with, the grazed areas rewoven — but the source is outside the house, so the nests and the screens matter as much as the rug does.
